Ever since I started as an image consultant in 1991, one of the hottest topics when I do colour analysis is whether or not the client can wear black - and the subject is never hotter than with women clients. Indeed, the issue has been such that for the first twelve years of my career I never wore black to work in.

One of the things I find when I make-up different women, particularly amongst those of us that love make-up and have been applying it for as long as possible is that quite often one can have a fixation on one part of our face making that part of the face look stronger than all the rest. Fair enough if it is lips or eyes, it has long been the fashion to make one of these look stronger. Wearing a nude lipstick, if eyes are smoky and sultry or putting more emphasis on the lips with strong reds and pinks when the eyes are softer and more natural. This is not the issue. The problem I find the greatest is eyelashes!

There are times in our lives when we feel enormous, we hate our tums, bums, arms, thighs etc and - nothing seems to fit properly. Quite often it's a problem inherited from our families or can be caused by child bearing or simply middle aged spread.

During the time I have spent as an image consultant I have seen the contents of many men's and women's wardrobes. Very often the items that stand out are the items bought in the sales. Why is that the case?

When the invite says formal or black tie many women consider not attending the event! So traumatised are they by the instruction to dress up! This article tells you how to do it.

There has never been a better time to know what you're doing clothes wise. Knowing your colouring and the shape of your body will save you pounds in unworn clothes and keep you looking good through the lean times.

One of the joys of knowing about your colouring and the colours which suit you is that it helps to save money. This has never been more useful than it is during the current economic climate.

Purple is one of the fashion colors of the moment, look hard enough in the shops and you can spot tops, skirts, coats, even handbags and shoes in purple. It's also a color with many different associations. Possibly because there's a purple for everyone, it's a universal color.

I was interested to read an article called 'Wearing red boosts attraction' online recently on the BBC website, mentioning that there had been a study by the University of Rochester published in a psychology journal that links red to attractiveness and going on to say that if you are going on a date and want your guy to loosen his wallet strings, wearing red will secure your wish as men are prepared to spend more on women who dress in red. This is no news to those of us who work ...

One of the questions I'm asked a lot about in my role as an Image Consultant is what to take on a cruise - usually by clients who have never cruised and know that I have. My first cruise was years ago, so long ago that there were still two class ships, first and second class passengers - I went on holiday on P&O's Oriana (the old one) and I was ruined for life.

Having been an Image Consultant for nearly eighteen years a large part of my job involves taking clients shopping for an outfit or a new wardrobe or just a few items to update his or her look. Quite often when a person shops with me once they will book to shop again because of the results. What does it involve?

Let's assume that you are happy with your skincare and make-up base and that you've applied foundation, any skin adjusters, concealer and powder you require. The next stage is blusher. There are creamy and powder blushers and it's best to pick whichever you prefer and works well on your skin.

In order for a woman's make-up to look good the base needs to be good and by base I don't just mean foundation (although that certainly helps) - I mean skin. If your skin is clean and well-hydrated your make-up will sit better on your face. Getting the skincare right and buying the correct products for your particular skin will pay dividends.

Once upon a time, when I was young and fair I was ambivalent about makeup. When I got married in the late seventies I very nearly did not wear any. It was only my bridesmaids persuasion that got me into any at all. Nearly thirty years later, makeup has to be one of my best friends. Since then I have undergone a metamorphosis into makeup woman, even (and I still can hardly believe this one applying it, advising on it and selling it).

Over the last eighteen years I've had a lot of people ask me this question. In answer I usually ask a few questions about when and where the person's colours were analysed and what they were made as a result of that analysis.

So, in my article Style Matters I mentioned that developing your personal style had to do with wearing clothes to suit your colouring and bodyshape but that you had to bear in mind your personality and the look you are trying to create. The different personalities can be divided into six types which helps you to figure out the type of look which would feel most comfortable.

One of the biggest headaches people seem to have is packing to go on holiday - and it seems that this is when the joy of having a coordinated wardrobe is best appreciated. If you have had your coloring analyzed and know your best shades then you will have learned how to co-ordinate your clothes.

So does what colour you wear even matter? There are a growing number out there including me who would answer with a resounding yes to that question. Before I ever trained to do colour analysis I was always aware of the affect of colour on my mood - wearing red if I wanted to feel good, black if I wanted to seem sophisticated and older and always wondering about magenta pink and camel.
